オーストラリア人アーティスト、ソフィア・エメットによる空気の彫刻のような手織りナイロン・メッシュの作品。軽やかで発色の良い、金物まで全てがリサイクル可能なマテリアルで作られた、日々の暮らしを楽しく彩るアクセサリーです。また、物質から日常的な意味をはぎとり、マテリアルとしての価値を見いだしながら美しい形を与える、ソフィアの姿勢を直接的に表現したCoalシリーズ、Graffitiシリーズの作品も一部お取り扱いしております。
You now make mesh-based accessories, was there a reason you moved into that path after making glasswork?
メッシュをベースとしたアクセサリーの制作は、ガラス制作の後になにか進展するきっかけがあったのですか？
I have always loved the sculptural nature of accessories. It is like carrying around your private art collection. With glass blowing, you need a lot of equipment. Now making jewellery, my workspace is a lot more portable.
アクセサリーの彫刻的な性質がずっと好きでした。まるでアートコレクションを持ち歩いているようで。吹きガラスではたくさんの設備が必要ですが、ジュエリー制作はもっと身軽に行えます。私のワークスペースもかなり身軽になりました。
Can you please tell us a little about your background, both professionally and personally?
仕事とご自身のバックグラウンドについて教えて頂けますか？
My parents are ceramicists, so I grew up around vessel making and firing hot kilns, and I went to art school to study ceramics. I visited a glass blowing studio as part of the course. I fell in love with the process, and once I had finished at art school, I travelled to the other side of Australia to work in a hot glass studio.
After working in the studio for two years and learning the basics, I moved to Adelaide to do a traineeship in the hot shop at the Jam Factory for another two years. Later I went to New York and Seattle in the U.S. to work with master glass blowers to gain more experience.
When I returned to Australia, I did post-graduate studies at Monash University in hot glass. Following my studies, I went off to Canberra to teach glass blowing at the Australian National University and at the Canberra Glassworks. During this time, I exhibited my sculptural glasswork and had a business making production glass pieces.
両親は陶芸家なので器を作ることや窯で陶を焼くことが身近な幼少期を送り、アートスクールで陶芸を勉強しました。学校のコースの一環で吹きガラスのスタジオを訪問したのですが、その制作のプロセスに夢中になりました。卒業後、ホットガラスのスタジオで働くためにオーストラリアの反対側へ行きました。
そこで2年間基礎を学んだ後、アデレイド（Adelaide）にあるJam Factoryのガラス工房で2年間研修をしました。そしてアメリカのニューヨークとシアトルで吹きガラスの師匠の元でさらに経験を積みました。
オーストラリアに戻り、モナシュ大学でホットガラスの博士課程を修了しました。研究に次いで、キャンベラに移りオーストラリア国立大学とCanberra Glass worksで吹きガラスを教えながら、ガラスの彫刻や自分のビジネスとしてガラスのアイテムを生産しました。
How do you make sculptural shapes? Also, creatively, what's the connection between working with glass and mesh?
どのように形成しているのですか？また、ガラスとメッシュで共通する点はありますか？
I use metal moulds and heat to form the mesh, similar to some glass blowing techniques. The mesh has similar visual properties as glass. It looks like glass cane work and has the same transparent effect.
金型にメッシュを入れて熱で形成していますが、吹きガラスの技術の中で似ているものがあります。メッシュは視覚的な性質においてもガラスと近いものがあります。ケーンワーク（色のついたガラス棒を使ってラインを入れたりする技法）の透過するエフェクトのようにも見えますね。
Where do you find inspiration, and how would you describe your work and its purpose?
インスピレーションはどこから得ますか？また、自分の作品をどのように説明しますか。
My past experience working with glass has definitely influenced my mesh pieces with the techniques I use. I live near the ocean and swim almost every day in summer. I'm continually finding amazing sea creatures and seaweed that supply me with an endless stream of inspiration for forms and ideas.
I like to think of my pieces as small sculptural forms. In creating my works, I believe that the most important thing for accessories is to be comfortable and joyous. Form and function are fundamental.
メッシュのアイテムで使っているテクニックは、過去のガラス制作の影響を絶対に受けていますね。海の近くに住んでいて、夏はほぼ毎日泳いでいます。継続的に見つけるのは驚くような海の生物と海藻。そこから形とアイディアのインスピレーションをとめどなく受けています。
私は自分の製作するピースを小さな彫刻と見ています。アクセサリーを創作する上で最も重要なことは快適さと喜びです。形と機能は基礎ですね。
Mesh accessories are light and vivid. What kind of situations do people enjoy wearing your accessories?
メッシュアクセサリーは軽くてヴィヴィッドな色が目を引きます。あなたのアクセサリーを身に付ける人にはどのような状況で楽しんで貰いたいですか？
'Happy, interesting and comfortable' are how I want people to feel when they wear my jewellery. The simple bright forms are extremely light to wear and will add a colourful sculptural point of interest to any outfit.
An example would be if my pieces were worn as part of a party outfit. The accessories would offer a little pop and contrast in more formal occasions and combination with dark-toned clothing. I love that the mesh can look delicate and fragile, but it is so durable and strong.

例えばパーティーのアウトフィットの一部として取り入れるのはいかがでしょう。このアクセサリーは少しポップさを出してくれるので、フォーマルな服装とのコントラストを引き立ててくれたり、ダークトーンの洋服と組み合わせるのもいいですね。私はメッシュが繊細で脆そうに見えるのに実際は耐久性と強度があるところが好きです。
