TOGETHERNESS はテキスタイルデザイナー＆イラストレーターのEsther Sandler（エスター・サンドラー）によるレーベル。テキスタイル、イラストレーション、セラミックなど、日常の為の製品作りを行っており、大胆な色、素朴なライン、そして模様へのこだわりを表現しています。サンドラーは生活の中の些細なこと－自然や近所の人々からインスピレーションを得て、そして過去と現在のデザイナーの作品から影響を受けています。テキスタイルやデザイン以外では、ガーデニング、アクセサリーの収集、飼い猫のBread とButter との戯れなどに情熱を注いでいます。
Created by textile designer & illustrator Esther Sandler, each Togetherness piece is made in Melbourne, Australia. The Togetherness range is a mix of textile , illustrat ion and more recently, ceramic based products that showcase an obsession with bold colour, naïve linework and pattern, pattern and more pattern. Esther finds inspiration in the small things in life and is influenced by nature, her neighbourhood and the work of designers from past and present. Apart from textiles and design her other passions include gardening, collecting trinkets and playing with her cats Bread and Butter.
What is the origin of the brand name?
ブランド名の由来は何ですか？
I stumbled across this word during a branding project at Uni in my final year and something about it just resonated with me. For me, Togetherness is not just about me, Esther, in my studio creating artwork and products. The label is about the whole journey, from myself the designer to the user or wearer of the product. I want that person to feel just as a part of the process as I am because they are just as crucial. With Togetherness, the aim from the start was to create a range of products with a focus on authenticity, that feel inclusive, accessible and that can impart value and warmth to the user.
大学の最終学年で行われたブランディングのプロジェクトで偶然この言葉に出会い、何か心に響くものを感じました。私にとって「Togetherness」とは、スタジオで作品や製品を作っている私、Esther( エスター) だけのことではありません。このレーベルは、デザイナーである私自身から、製品を使う人や身につける人までの、すべての旅を意味しています。その人にも、私と同じようにプロセスの一部であると感じてもらいたいのです。Togetherness では、最初から真正性に焦点を当て、包括的で親しみやすく、使う人に価値と暖かさを与えることができる製品群を作ることを目指していました。

What is your favorite product from your own brand?
自分のブランドでお気に入りの商品は何ですか？
Such a hard question to answer! I love my ceramic products as due to the fact they are handmade, each of them is totally different to each other so they each have their own personality! I also love seeing my textile designs come alive on garments and being transformed from something that began as a 2D painting, into a 3D wearable piece.
答えるのが難しい質問ですね。私のセラミック製品は、ハンドメイドであるため、ひとつひとつが全く異なる個性を持っていて、とても気に入っています。また、自分のデザインしたテキスタイルが服の上で生き生きと動き出し、2D の絵画から3D のウェアラブルピースへと変化していくのを見るのも好きです。
Tea towels are the sort of thing that people often bought as a souvenir in the past when on holiday. There are beautiful vintage tea towels that you can find for all different places and attractions - it’s actually one of my favourite things to hunt for in op shops here in Melbourne! They are the sort of thing that can be appreciated for their artwork, and even hung on the wall or framed, but also have a functional usage in the kitchen, so make for a perfect gift.
ティータオルは、昔、旅行に行ったときにお土産としてよく買ったものです。様々な場所や観光地で、美しいヴィンテージのティータオルを見つけることができます。実は、私はメルボルンのショップティータオルを探すのが大好きなんです。アート作品として鑑賞したり、壁に掛けたり、額に入れて飾ったりすることもできますが、キッチンで機能的に使うこともできるので、プレゼントにも最適です。
Please tell us about the tea towel culture in Australia. Japanese doesn't really have this culture.
オーストラリアのティータオル文化について教えてください。日本にはこのような文化はあまりありません。
Please share more about your work with building sustainable practices, and what you are planning to do more of in the future.
サステイナブルな活動の構築について、また今後の計画についてお聞かせください。
As a very small label, I feel empowered that I get to make decisions that align with my own values and focusing on being sustainable is a high priority. Within my product range, I aim to focus on longevity and thoughtfulness from the designs themselves to the way an item is made.
Materials focus on natural fibres are thoughtfully considered for their durability and wearability while products are designed to be functional and stand the test of time, aiming to avoid the throwaway nature of trend driven fast fashion. The digital printing we use utilises a low impact process without the need for harmful chemicals and minimising water use, and the small quantities we print ensures low wastage. We also aim to recycle or compost all waste from our studio where possible, including all fabric scraps, packaging and paper. In 2020 we moved to solar power for our ceramic firing.
In the future, I really want to focus on utilising more local suppliers in order to cut down on unnecessary transport and to support my local creative community and I’m starting this with the printing of my garment and earrings tags – moving them from interstate to a local letterpress printer just down the road from my studio!

天然繊維を中心とした素材は、耐久性と着用感を考慮しており、製品は機能的で長く使えるようにデザインされており、トレンドに左右されるファストファッションのような使い捨ての性質を避けることを目指しています。
使用しているデジタルプリントは、有害な化学物質を使用せず、水の使用を最小限に抑えた低負荷のプロセスを利用しており、少量のプリントであるため無駄が少ないのも特徴です。また、スタジオから出るすべての廃棄物（生地の端切れ、パッケージ、紙など）は、可能な限りリサイクルまたはコンポスト化することを目指しています。2020 年には、セラミックの焼成に太陽光発電を導入しました。
将来的には、不要な輸送を減らし、地元のクリエイティブ・コミュニティを支援するために、より地元のサプライヤーを活用することに重点を置きたいと思っています。この取り組みは、衣服やイヤリングのタグの印刷から始めようと思っています。
Have you ever been to Japan? If so, what places have you visited in Japan? What are your memories of Japan like? Where is your memorable place?
あなたは日本に行ったことがありますか？もしあるなら、日本のどんな場所を訪れましたか。日本での思い出はどのようなものでしょうか。また、あなたの思い出の場所はどこですか？
I’ve been lucky to visit Japan three times before and each time as been a beautifully memorable experience! I’ve only been to a few places so far – Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Nara, Hiroshima and Fukuoka – but would love to come back and explore some more. Japan has such a beauty to it and there is so much to explore – the nature, the people, the food, the cities, the seasons. My most memorable times have included staying in Kurokawa Onsen, the first night staying in Hiroshima and eating Okonomiyaki at a market stand where the owner had recently lived in Melbourne and showed us photos, exploring little bars in Tokyo, stocking up on art supplies at Tokyu Hands and visiting Naoshima island. I’ve never visited a country that has felt so different to where I live, Japan really felt like another very exciting world to me and was very inspiring!
幸運なことに、これまでに3 回、日本を訪れることができましたが、どの回も美しい思い出となりました。これまでに行ったことがあるのは、東京、大阪、京都、奈良、広島、福岡の数カ所だけですが、ぜひ戻ってきて、もっといろいろなところを見てみたいですね。
日本はとても美しく、自然、人々、食べ物、都市、季節など、探索すべきことがたくさんあります。最も印象に残っているのは、黒川温泉に泊まったこと、広島に泊まった初日に屋台でお好み焼きを食べたこと、店主が最近メルボルンに住んでいて写真を見せてくれたこと、東京の小さなバーを探検したこと、東急ハンズで画材を買い込んだこと、直島に行ったことなどです。
自分が住んでいる場所とこんなにも違うと感じた国を訪れたことはありませんでした。日本は私にとって、とてもエキサイティングな別世界のように感じられ、とても刺激的でした。
What is your favorite time of the day?
1 日の中で一番好きな時間は何ですか？
I love the morning and my little morning routine – getting up, saying hello to the cats, putting on coffee and checking in on my garden to see if anything new has grown overnight.
朝が好きです。起きて、猫たちに挨拶して、コーヒーを入れて、一晩で何か新しいものが育っていないか庭をチェックするという、朝のちょっとした日課です。
What are your weaknesses?
あなたの弱点は何ですか？
Oh I have so many, where do I start :) ! I think the parts of me that make me driven, motivated and creative also have a darker side and I can tend to work too much, get overwhelmed and compare myself to others, particularly on social media.
たくさんありすぎて、どこから話しましょうか☺ ! 私は、原動力、やる気、創造性を生み出す部分には暗い面もあると思っていて、仕事をしすぎたり、圧倒されたり、特にソーシャルメディア上で他人と自分を比較したりする傾向があります。
What is your favourite music?
お気に入りの音楽は何ですか？
At the moment things in Melbourne are still not back to normal after Covid-19 so I have been listening to a lot of local music that I might normally be able to see in person – bands like Terry, Parsnip, Primo, Constant Mongrel and The Green Child. I’ve also been delving back into older music like The Byrds, The Zombies and The Kinks.
現在、メルボルンでは、Covid-19 の後、まだ通常の状態に戻っていないので、Terry、Parsnip、Primo、Constant Mongrel、The Green Child などのバンドのように、普段、実際に見ることができるかもしれない地元の音楽をたくさん聴いています。また、The Byrds、The Zombies、The Kin ks などの古い音楽にも触れています。
Which artists inspire you? Are there any artists in Japan that you get inspiration from?
インスピレーションを受けるアーティストは？また、日本で影響を受けたアーティストはいますか？
I’m greatly inspired by some key designers from the past and look to them as mentors to keep me in line creatively when things start to get a bit wobbly, or I begin to compare myself too much to those around me. These designers include Sonia Delaunay, Maija Isola and Gunta Stotzl.
It’s easy to get swept up with what is in fashion or trending, and I’m always fighting this in order to create longevity within my designs, so looking at the enduring legacy of these designers really helps me.
Speaking of talented women, I’m also continually inspired and amazed by the supportive network of creatives I find myself among in Australia – people like Min Pin, Lori Camarata, Wolf & Mishka, Tara Whalley, Trinket Solo, Edith Rewa, Kate Dansey, Emily Green and more!
Some Japanese artists that I greatly admire include the fun illustrations of Misaki Kawai and Mogu Takahashi, Makoto Kagoshima’s wonderful ceramics and amazing fashion designer Tsumori Chisato!
私は、過去の主要なデザイナーから大きな影響を受けています。物事が少しずつ不安定になったり、周りの人と自分を比較しすぎたりしたときに、私の創造性を維持するためのメンターとなります。ソニア・ドローネー、マイヤ・イソラ、グンタ・ストッツルなどのデザイナーです。
流行やトレンドに流されるのは簡単なことですが、私は自分のデザインを長持ちさせるために常にこの点と戦っています。
才能のある女性といえば、私はオーストラリアのクリエーターたちのサポートネットワークにいつも刺激を受け、驚いています。Min Pin、Lori Camarata、Wolf & Mishka、Tara Whalley、Trinket Solo、Edith Rewa、Kate Dansey、Emily Green などなど。
