Our parents met in Nepal, hiking the Anapurna circuit. Our Mum is Australian and Dad is first generation Canadian (his parents were refugees from Slovenia after World War II). They instilled in us a strong sense of resourcefulness (particularly Dad’s side – our grandpa used to use teabags at least 3 times before putting them in the bin) and the importance of quality over quantity (from Mum whose family had a sheep farm and knew the value of beautiful natural fibres).
So it was only natural that Karina and I would start a waste-to-resource business...

But we worked separately after university. I spent a few years at the profit-for-purpose Gilimbaa Indigenous creative agency and started several community initiatives in Brisbane. Karina headed to New York and spent just 6 months working in the fashion industry to be turned off by the exploitative practices and extreme waste. She then moved on to the artisanal food scene in Brooklyn where
companies were sharing innovation, resources and even waste!

When she returned home, it was the catalyst for starting Seljak Brand. We wanted to find alternative models to make, use and dispose of stuff, and we wanted to offer something beautiful to consumers so they could be part of a more sustainable future.

We wanted to work with local resources, and we were fascinated by wool and the key role it had played in Australia’s economy. Not to mention the fact that it’s a wonder fibre – it has so many amazing properties! So we researched what was happening in the wool industry in Australia and come across the wool mill in Tasmania where we initially started weaving our recycled wool blankets.

Now, we work with mills in Australia, Italy and Lithuania to weave our blankets thatare made from factory floor offcuts, deadstock yarn and post-consumer textiles waste like old woollen jumpers!

大学卒業後に、私たちは別々に働き始めましたが、ニューヨークへ行ったカリーナがオーストラリアに戻ったことがブランドを始める後押しになりました。

私たちが地場産業と仕事がしたいと思っていたとき、私たちはオーストラリアの経済を支えるウールに魅了されました。それらは素晴らしい繊維である以前に、たくさんの優れた性質を持っています。そこで私たちはオーストラリアのウール産業の現状をリサーチし、私たちが最初のリサイクルウールブランケットを織ったタズマニアの羊毛工場にたどり着きました。

現在はオーストラリアや、イタリア、リトアニアの羊毛工場で、工場の床に落ちている端材やデッドストックになってしまった糸、ウールのジャンパーなどの一度消費者の手に渡ったテキスタイルを再利用したブランケットを織っています。
